Welcome to Cuthbert Year 6
Lessons
In maths, we are concentrating on our understanding of number and place value. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are our focus to ensure we have the ability to use the standard methods of calculation, which we will go on to use to solve problems later in the year. We are also learning about fractions, decimals, and the link between them. Mrs Walton is teaching us about 2D shapes this term and every Friday we have Big Maths. We all love this, as we get to dance, and are rewarded with stickers and certificates. Additionally, if we beat our ‘Beat That’ score, we get an extra 15 minutes of Golden Time on Friday afternoon – something we all love!
As well as learning our year 5 and 6 spellings in class, we also go to different groups 4 times a week to learn different spellings with children from Bede. Each week we have a comprehension lesson where we look at the different types of questions. Recently, we have begun using a group of dogs to help us know what type of answer a question requires. Rex the Retriever and Inference Iggy are two of them who guide us towards the correct answer. Accelerated Reading also engages us with our reading as it tests our understanding as well as provides a weekly competition for who can read the most words – Word Count Wizard. As well as learning about the different elements of grammar, we are writing different stories, thinking about how we can improve our work linked to our targets. We have written about a school bully and created our own Greek Myth (linked to our history topic). Other genres of writing covered, include reports, autobiographies and recounts. Films (such as Birthday Boy), music, photographs and characters are used to provide us with ideas about our writing, acting as a prompt to motivate us further.
