Welcome to Penshaw – Year 5
Thanks for looking at Penshaw’s Page!
Our mornings commence with either a maths or English sheet – it really helps us to focus for the day. Each week, we practise our tricky spelling words. We start to learn a new set each weekend as part of our homework and then each day, we participate in a range of activities to help them stick in our memory. At the end of the week we take a spelling test to see how well we have done – another ten out of ten!
Daily maths covers everything from addition to fractions, measurement and statistics. We use a variety of equipment to help us, from blocks to laptops! We heavily focus on all the times tables, from two’s up to twelves. Times Tables Rock Stars is one of the online apps which really make learning our tables fun!
We cover lots of different genres in English. This term we have focused on the poem Jabberwocky, looking at the toolbox of words which are used and the performance of it. We’ve created and performed our own poems and we’re now focusing on writing a non-chronological report about this fantastic poem.
This terms science is looking at Matter – in the form of Solids, Liquids and Gases. We’re also carrying out experiments using fizzy pop and chocolate.
In RE, we have looked at the themes of Christianity and Diwali.
Line drawings, colour and tone were our focus in art lessons. We got very creative and enjoyed it too.
Finally, we’ve been looking at ancient Greece…and enjoying making masks and learning about this interesting topic!
