The ethos and curriculum of Bullion Lane Primary School are driven by 4 golden threads that epitomise our school values and beliefs. These threads encourage our children to believe in themselves and to ‘reach for the stars.’
Respect
Respect is at the heart of our values. We are an inclusive school where everyone is valued and has a contribution to make. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. Respect is one of our values taught explicitly within lessons, assemblies and within the ethos of our school. Adults through the school model, demonstrate and promote respect for others as do older children who have suitable, age-related tasks and responsibilities and this is re-iterated through our classroom and learning rules, as well as our behaviour. Our children in years 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoy the responsibilities of being playground leaders, lunchtime monitors, librarians, school council and house captains. These responsibilities contribute to a significant sense of mutual respect throughout the school.
Tolerance
At Bullion Lane, we have an increasingly diverse intake and we use this to support our children to learn from each other by sharing and celebrating their different faiths and cultures. All different faiths and beliefs are explored and celebrated through assemblies, RE sessions, visitors into school and trips and visits out. Discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying are followed up and supported by learning in RE and RPSHE.
Throughout school life, children are encouraged to discuss differences between people such as their faith, ethnicity, disability, gender or sexuality.
Lessons reinforce messages of tolerance for others, while children of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school.
Empathy
Empathy is one of our key values. Children learn to think about how other people are feeling through communication and language, RPSHE and RE lessons, as well as through daily life at playtimes and during assemblies.
Children are taught to consider the feelings of others before they act/react developing positive relationships and attitudes towards each other.
Children are taught to empathise through celebrations of their British knowledge and the cultural and historical traditions that we are renowned for the world over. This involves celebrating royal events, Remembrance Day, festivals such as Harvest, Christmas, Easter (alongside those from other cultures such as Eid, Diwali and Chinese New Year for example). The school recognises St George’s Day and other Saints days through assemblies and discussions in class.
Ambition
We want every child to leave Bullion Lane ‘reaching for the stars,’ believing that anything is possible.
We like every child to have a desire to do or achieve something.
We like every child to have a desire and determination to achieve success.
We always look for ways for our children to challenge themselves. At Bullion Lane we seek to widen children’s aspirations for the future and develop an understanding of the importance of contributing to their community and society.
Children at Bullion Lane have responsibility and leadership roles. They represent the school at sporting events and festivals. RPSHE lessons and assemblies include information about careers and how they are usually linked to specific subjects in school.
Our children are provided with a wide, rich set of experiences giving them opportunities to develop their talents and interests. Extra-curricular activities are extensive where we offer a range of clubs such as performing arts, football, multi- skills, art, sewing, cross country, music, lego and games. Children are encouraged to participate in new activities which they will then hopefully pursue.
